NEW WILMINGTON, PA – Westminster College will welcome Keith Stevens ’88, award-winning Christian radio host, to give the 32nd annual Wayne H. Christy Memorial Lecture at 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Wallace Memorial Chapel.

Stevens is program director at KTIS radio station in Minneapolis, Minn., and a co-host with Donna Cruz on the contemporary Christian music (CCM) national show “Keep the Faith.”

Stevens graduated from Westminster in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast communications. While at Westminster, he hosted his first CCM show, called “Covenant,” which won an award as the best Christian college radio show in the nation.

After graduating, Stevens filled various roles—morning show host, weekend host and program director—at radio stations in New York and Pennsylvania. In the early 1990s, Stevens said he felt God’s calling for something deeper, which led him back to Christian radio. Though this led him to several radio stations, Stevens said he trusted God as his savior and dreamed of a Christian music FM for New York.

Stevens became the first major air talent hired to help launch STAR 99.1, New York, a CCM station, in late 2002. His “Family Friendly Afternoon Show” enjoyed high ratings for eight years. Stevens also hosted the weekly show “Made for Worship” and served as music director and assistant program director before accepting his current position with KTIS in 2010.

The Wayne H. Christy Memorial Lecture series honors the late Dr. Wayne Christy, a long-time faculty member and chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Westminster College. As Dr. Christy dedicated his life to relating the heritage of faith to the emerging issues of a changing culture, the lecture series seeks out men and women who distinguish themselves by relating Christian faith to issues of contemporary life.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Diane Gabriel in the Office of Faith and Spirituality at 724-946-7117 or gabriedl@westminster.edu.

NEW WILMINGTON, PA – Dr. Deanne Buffalari, assistant professor of psychology and chair of the neuroscience program, recently received a grant from the Society for the Teaching of Psychology to improve teaching research methods and skills in Introduction to Psychology courses.

Buffalari’s grant proposal focused on trying to integrate research skills and methodology into the earliest psychology course usually taught—Introduction to Psychology. The grant will provide funding for development and assessment of the changes being made in the course, as well as for travel to a conference where Buffalari will present her findings.

“Experts are placing an increased focus on the skills and methods that students learn in their courses,” Buffalari said. “But early introductory courses are often focused on content, not skills and methodology.”

The Society for Teaching Psychology, which is a division of the American Psychological Association, awards these grants annually to instructors who submit proposals aimed at researching the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Buffalari joined the Westminster faculty in 2014. She earned her undergraduate degree from Allegheny College and her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.

For more information about her work, contact Dr. Deanne Buffalari, assistant professor of psychology and chair of the neuroscience program, at 724-946-7358 or buffald@westminster.edu.

NEW WILMINGTON, PA – Award-winning and internationally acclaimed poet Ilya Kaminsky will read from his works at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 6, in the Maple-Witherspoon Room of Westminster’s McKelvey Campus Center.

Born in 1977 in Odessa, in the former Soviet Union, Kaminsky—who lost most of his hearing at age 4—and his family were granted political asylum to the United States in 1993. Kaminsky began to write poems in English following his father’s death in 1994.

“I chose English because no one in my family or friends knew it—no one I spoke to could read what I wrote. I myself did not know the language. It was a parallel reality, an insanely beautiful freedom. It still is,” Kaminsky said in an interview with The Adirondack Review.

In 2002, the Tupelo Press published Kaminsky’s “Dancing In Odessa,” a book of poems that draw on his experiences in Odessa. The book earned the 2004 Best Poetry Book by ForeWord Magazine, the Whiting Writer’s Award, the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Metcalf Award, the Dorset Prize and the Ruth Lilly Fellowship presented by Poetry magazine.

Kaminsky’s most recent collection, “Deaf Republic,” will be published in March 2019.

Kaminsky’s work has been translated into several languages and his books have been published in many countries, including Turkey, Holland, Russia, France, Mexico, Macedonia, Romania, Spain and China, where his poetry was awarded the Yinchuan International Poetry Prize.

Kaminsky’s other honors include the Milton Center’s Award for Excellence in Writing, the Florence Kahn Memorial Award, Poetry magazine’s Levinson Prize, Philips Exeter Academy’s George Bennett Fellowship and a Lannan Foundation fellowship.

Kaminsky co-founded Poets for Peace, which sponsors poetry readings across the globe to support relief work. Kaminsky has also worked as a clerk for the National Immigration Law Center and for Bay Area Legal Aid.  Kaminsky holds a B.A. from Georgetown University and a J.D. from the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law.

The poetry reading—sponsored by the Westminster Department of English, the Disabilities Awareness Club and Scrawl—is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact Dr. David Swerdlow, professor of English, at 724-946-7345 or dswerdlw@westminster.edu.
